Matthew Holtz: A Global Approach to Ecological Issues
Matthew Holtz, Director of the Secretariat of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations
Abstract: The most important way to solve the current ecological problems facing humanity is to implement the UN Millennium Development Goals and strengthen dialogue among all parties.
We are all dwellers of the same planet, facing ecological threats of one kind or another. There is an international consensus that an act is urgently needed to protect our environment. But in some major international conferences, different political and economic interests have diverged so much that reaching some agreement becomes difficult. We will find an approach to solve the problem, and the approach, which I like a lot, is globalization. We can see the sea level rising now, and this will affect everyone. It is a globalized world now, and we should all fulfill our responsibilities to each other and form a common community. The most important way to solve the current ecological problems facing humanity is to implement the UN Millennium Development Goals and strengthen dialogue among all parties. The deeper this dialogue goes, the more we can discover where our common interests lie and the more we can serve the people of the world.
