Louise Lake-Tack: Creativity in Promoting the Process of Ecological Civilization

Louise Lake-Tack, Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda

Abstract: We must find creative ways to advance the process of building an ecological civilization, to achieve sustainable development through inclusive dialogue and changes in production methods.

It is a great honor to be here in beautiful Hangzhou city for the Second Annual Conference of Taihu Cultural Forum, and to speak at the Opening Ceremony is a particular privilege for me.

Hangzhou is a beautiful city. The amazing scenery of the West Lake gives me a lot of inspiration, soothing my mind with excellent environment. I believe this is very relevant to our discussion on ecological civilization. At the same time, I also believe that our aim is to achieve a harmonious world. I think that this is a vivid example of cooperation between countries in the international community. I am convinced that the Forum will become a new platform and a vibrant expression of the interaction of the international community.

I come from Antigua and Barbuda. We hope to work together with all parties to build a sustainable ecological civilization. Our country is privileged to participate in this important international forum, as Antigua and Barbuda and the People's Republic of China celebrate the 30th anniversary of its diplomatic tie this year, an important milestone in the history of our bilateral relations.

Building an ecological civilization and addressing ecological disasters like global warming, decline of species, and climate change are crucial for our country. The excessive human intervention or destruction of nature, the unsustainable use of coal, oil and gas, and the emission of pollutants including greenhouse gases cause the ecological disasters, which will affect the health of future generations. Our government is keen to address the above-mentioned global challenges through international cooperation.

We are a very small country, but we are fully aware of the disasters and negative impacts of environmental changes, especially natural disasters. We are also aware of the importance of dialogue and cooperation with other countries, and that only by strengthening bilateral relations and multilateral cooperation will we be able to effectively address these challenges. So we hope that the United Nations will uphold its legitimacy as the broadest international organization to mobilize countries to cooperate.

We are also clear that if the planet warms further, there will be negative impacts on water resources, wildlife, the oceans, and the air, and some countries may be submerged, and some people may be forced to migrate to other countries. This requires us to maintain the international order and build an ecological civilization. But we also know that this effort is a complex process, and we must creatively advance the process of building an ecological civilization to reorient domestic policies to achieve sustainable development through inclusive dialogue and changes in production methods.
